Dodgers lose again to tighten up the race

There are now 6(!!!) teams within 4(!!!) games of the 2nd Wild Card spot. After tonight’s games (that matter to this race) the Cardinals, Dodgers, Pirates, Brewers, Phillies, and Diamondbacks are all battling for that last spot. The Braves are only 3.5 games clear with a weekend series with Washington coming up, so they need to watch their back a little as well. In his blog on ESPN today, Jayson Stark gave a small breakdown on what would/could/might happen if 3 teams tie for the final spot. It is quite interesting. He gave a number of scenarios, the first being if the Phillies, Brewers, and Cardinals end the season with identical records. Because of a complicated tie-breaker system the Brewers would have the choice to play 2 home games or 1 road game for a chance to play the other Wild Card in the one game playoff. Don’t ask me how they came up with this format, but it could be an absolute scheduling nightmare if any 3-way tie happens. It is rare for three teams to finish with identical records anywhere in the standings, and certainly for the last playoff spot, but it is definitely in play this season. 19 games left and that single playoff spot could be realistically taken by 6 different teams.
